The bike has a hard life

When my brother got back from India, he told me how big families rode together on bikes. I was incredulous…until now. We are trying to find a way to fit David in the trunk.

Below is Elijah in his bike getup. I thought I’d get a picture of first signs of Spring in NYC: not the big overcoat, but the yellow flowers.

Someone had just given him a big candy, thus the chipmunk cheek.

Twins

People never tell me my kids look like me or David. They mainly just say they look like each other. At birth though, Claire was half pound chunkier than Elijah.

Rent

As we come to the end of the month, I will soon be cringing as I drop the rent check into the box-of-no-return. The money is not going towards something that we will one day own with a lawn or a porch. That money is gone forever. Today I calculated that we pay $4.11 monthly per square foot of living space. When we were first married, we lived in what we affectionately called “The Tool Shed,” which is probably approximately the same size as where we live now. That was a monthly $0.33 per square foot. Upon pondering this phenomenon, I started to make a pro/con list of living here, or actually a con/pro list, but I won’t detail further since I don’t want to seem the pessimist. I really do enjoy NYC, but sometimes tool sheds are appealing too. Above is a picture of us about a year after marriage. We had just moved out of The Tool Shed to NYC for the summer. Don’t we look happy!

New Developments

Claire: Leans her head towards us when we say “besitos.” That's what she's doing in this picture.
Elijah’s favorite new phrase: “I no want spaño. No gusta spaño.” Translation: Stop speaking to me in Spanish.

25 things about Elijah

It was much easier for me to come up with these 25 things than to come up with 25 things about myself… scary.

1. His favorite scripture story is Jesus throwing the money changers out of the temple. We read it most nights.
2. He used to take 3 baths a day, but now prefers 1 a day with his sister.

3. Every time we get off the subway he runs to his friend the flower seller who gives him a flower.
4. Between the subway and home he gives the flower away to someone.
5. If there is anyone around him, he asks them to help him instead of me (i.e, opening his juice box, tying his shoe, etc.).
6. He usually picks out his own clothes and they usually don’t match.
7. He carries around Minnie Mouse everywhere. It was actually given to Claire by Los Abuelos Garcia for Christmas. If they knew he possessed it, they might not be pleased.
8. He picks the skin off his lips and bites his fingernails to no end.
9. He yells “Obama” when he sees pictures of him.
10. He convinced David to vote for McCain.
11. He often asks where his cousins, aunts, and uncles are. He wants to know why he can’t play with them.
12. He snores so loud it’s hard for David to sleep in the same room with him (we are in a 1 bedroom apartment). Consequently, David set up a pediatric otorhinolaryngologist appointment for next week. Adding to our nighttime listening pleasure, he usually falls asleep with a matchbox car in each hand, several nearby, along with his keys so that every time he tosses or turns, it sounds like we have a chain gang in the room with us.
13. Today he threw 5 tantrums in public. All out tantrums. On the floor kicking. He split his mouth in Rite Aid, but I think it was more a product of stretching dry lips than his head hitting the floor.
14. He is trying to get rid of his naps and has crazy moments because of it (see #13).
15. Rebel without a bedtime. I tell him to go to bed. He refuses and falls asleep in the hall (see picture).

16. He loves church and is very loved. I never thought I would be a parent who let her kids roam around, but he wanders to different families during sacrament meeting.
17. Whenever he sees someone he especially likes in the front of the sacrament room, he usually yells at them. David said the prayer and of course he yelled at him. Alan Hamilton, the organist often gets a shout out.
18. A few Sundays ago David was translating for a high counselor and Elijah ran all the way around the church. I had to run in front of the whole congregation and still didn’t catch him until his second lap.
19. He loves his sister. Sometimes at his playgroup he only wants to play with her.
20. A girl in his playgroup loves him. Her mom said, “Te gusta Elijah?” And she said, “Me encanta Elijah.” He chased her around the room, but lost interest when he saw someone pulling out snacks.

21. Some people use “um,” “so,” or “like” as filler words. Elijah’s filler word is “por que.” Sometimes for variation he’ll say “why.” Nonstop. Most of the time I’m quite sure he doesn’t know what he’s asking. Once he said it after I said, “Because it’s a car.” “Por que?” he asked. Did he want to know why a car is a car? Or maybe he’s a philosopher.
22. Elijah’s favorite toy is his bike. Given the recent weather, he rides it inside more than out and calls it his taxi. He, Claire, and I often go to the store, temple, and Chuckie Cheeses in his taxi. The 3 of us can actually fit on it together, but it’s much easier on my legs to go backward than forward. His necessary bike accessories include his sombrero, his keys (which hang off the handlebars when the taxi is in motion), and all his favorite toys in the basket in back. Incidentally, the bike is also Claire’s favorite toy; she likes to pull out all his favorite toys.
23. He calls his dad Daddy Dulce because he associates him with trips to candy stores, ice cream, and sugar in general.
24. He has just started calling his sister “Claire,” and even now it’s sporadic. When people ask him what her name is, he says “Baby.” We never call her that, so I’m not sure where it came from. Sometimes he calls her "hija."
25. As noted in an earlier post, he has an imaginary dog named Paco, but doesn’t refer to him too often anymore. He does have other imaginary beings at times though, including cats, monsters, and “hombres.” The other day he kept referring to a “hombre” in the room with us. It was kinda creepy.

Cars

Elijah has always enjoyed making lines of cars. We were trying to see if he was taller than this line of cars.

Introducing...

NYC’s Japanese-speaking population that reads free newspapers has been officially introduced to the beautiful Claire, our red water bottle, the wheels of our stroller, and my 1st and 2nd chins. (See http://home.nyseikatsu.com/) As stated earlier, I have no idea what the newspaper reports since it’s all in Japanese, but judging by the fact that we made front page, I would guess it must be something that has been slow-moving lately. We're starting out small. Look for us next in the New York Times' fashion section (although it might be in Swahili or Apache, we'll iron out the details later).

Yum Yum

Elijah has found a clever way to evade the omnipresent nose-wiper, or at least mostly. He cleans his mucus himself by sticking 2 fingers up his nose, then swiping downward, shoveling all into his mouth, thus enjoying the fruits of his dig.

After

Notice these pictures were taken at 2 different times. This is an all-day activity.

Garbage Disposal

We used to call my dad “Garbage Disposal.” At the end of dinner, we passed all our uneaten food to his plate for consumption. As he grew more wary of his waistline, the title was passed on to our dog. Now it’s Claire’s turn. Elijah used to pull her highchair right next to his place at the table for the purposes of entertainment (hitting the metal with his fork, playing hide and seek, spitting contests, etc). Now the stealthy child sneaks his unwanted food onto her tray; and most of his food is unwanted. At first she ground all with her gums and her one, long tooth. A second one has come in to help the process, but I think a lot slides down whole. That baby can eat!

Elijah had his first soccer lesson today, but was too shy to step on the field. What? Elijah shy? I don’t understand. Sunday he sat on the subway next to a woman and talked the whole way: “Where you Daddy? You 5? I go to party with you…” But too timid to kick a ball.

Coming out of the Closet

Elijah slept in the bathroom until he was 6 months old. Since then, he has been quite regular and enjoyed bathroom time. He bathes thrice each day: with each member of the family. Do the early sleeping arrangements and this affinity have a connection?
Claire, on the other hand, sleeps in the closet. I can only hope this might mean some swanky stylin’ is in her future, as opposed to the other, not as pleasant closet connotations.

Here’s the subway story of the week: A Japanese writer/photographer sat next to us on the subway and asked if she could take some pictures. I am used to the extra attention we draw in crowds, but she was waiting for the doors to open for better lighting and picking the lint off my coat. Then she asked if she could take some pictures of us outside. When she was done, she said she’d contact me if she published the pictures. And she did. Apparently we will be on the front page of an all-Japanese free New York newspaper. I’m just hoping the headline isn’t “Americans Gone Wild on the Subway” or “Take a Shower Already!” I guess even if that is the headline, I won’t know the difference. Below is one of the pictures she took.

Yellow Snow

Claire is crawling and Elijah has a new horse to ride.
Notice Elijah's mid-morning snack.

Today Elijah got the yellow snow lecture on the way back from the doctor's office. He got a blood draw and didn't cry even though the nurse was squeezing blood out of his finger for a while. I should have told her that he was used to pain and by the way he lives his life, one would think he enjoys it.

General Conferece

General Conference weekend! We picked up Elijah on Saturday night and then headed to the Provo Creamery. Fortunately for us, Elijah's fr...
